Portugal digital nomad visa from the U.S.: documents and apostille

Portugal distinguishes between residence and temporary-stay visas for remote work. The correct category depends on the intended duration and purpose of the stay.

Remote work and income

An employee presents a contract and letter confirming remote work; a self-employed applicant documents contracts or services provided to entities. The average income for the previous three months is calculated using four Portuguese minimum monthly wages, an amount that should be verified when applying.

Criminal record and apostille

Applicants provide criminal records from the country of nationality or extended residence. If the U.S. document required is an FBI record, its apostille is federal. Validity periods vary across consular checklists, so do not order it too early.

Other documents

Checklists include insurance with repatriation, accommodation, statements, evidence of tax residence and apostilled civil records for family members. Documents in English may receive different treatment from documents in other languages, but the competent office may still require translation.

Applying from the United States

VFS Portugal announced in-person filing by jurisdiction beginning in June 2026. VFS accepts applications, but the Embassy or consulate makes the decision.
