Colombia digital nomad visa: documents, apostille and translation

Practical guide · Published July 29, 2026

The Visitor Visa for digital nomads allows qualifying foreign remote workers to stay in Colombia while working for companies or clients abroad. Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides each application and may request additional documents.

Who may apply

The category is intended for nationals exempt from short-stay visas who work remotely for foreign companies or operate a digital enterprise. It does not authorize paid work for a person or company domiciled in Colombia.

Employment letter, contract and income

The company letter may be submitted in Spanish or English and should explain the relationship, compensation and remote work; include the contract when one exists. Statements for the previous three months must show the minimum income calculated using Colombian minimum wages, so the amount should be verified each year.

Insurance and family documents

The policy must cover Colombia for the stay, including illness, accident, hospitalization and repatriation. Birth and marriage records for beneficiaries may require apostilles and translations.

What needs an apostille or translation?

The general rule applies to foreign public documents, but Colombia provides exceptions for bank statements that are readily understandable in an official language of the Organization of American States. Do not apostille statements automatically without checking the current list.

Frequently asked questions

Is an FBI background check automatically required?

It is not listed as a standard document for every application, although the authority may conduct checks or request records.

Can I work for a Colombian company?

Not under this category.

Must English statements be translated?

They may fall within the language exception if fully understandable, but the authority may request clarification.
