How to Apostille a U.S. Birth Certificate for Use in Mexico

A U.S. birth certificate can be needed in Mexico for very different reasons: family unity in an immigration case, marriage, birth registration, nationality, or other civil-registry procedures. Not every one of those cases requires an apostilled certificate, and ordering one you do not actually need only costs time and money. Before requesting anything, confirm exactly which authority the document will be presented to: a Mexican consulate in the United States, Mexico's National Immigration Institute (INM) or a civil registry once you are already in Mexico, or a different authority depending on the procedure.
A U.S. birth certificate may be requested in a Mexican immigration case when it is needed to prove a family relationship. It may also be required for entirely different procedures, such as marriage registration, birth registration, nationality, or other civil-registry matters. The apostille requirement depends on the specific procedure and the receiving authority.
